Perhaps the greatest importance of the Tarawa campaign was that it convinced the people of the US that they faced a long, difficult and bloody road before victory could be obtained. Photographs of dead Americans sprawled at the water's edge, some partly covered by sand moved in by the tide, were taken. There was discussion over whether to release these to the public. Finally the decision was made to release them to bring reality home to the public. This was one small island, about the size of Central Park in New York City. The fight to capture it lasted just under four days, and cost 996 Marines their lives. There was still a long way to go to get to Tokyo.

Tarawa was the main Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, so the campaign marked the first step the US had taken on the stepping stones across the Pacific since the Solomon Islands were invaded at Guadalcanal in August 1942.
