Mississippi's Black Codes are laws enacted by fearful white southerners after the emancipation due to the civil war. So while according to the nation 'blacks' were free, these southern laws enabled farmers, and business owners to still control their former slaves. The codes themselves are easy to find if you simply bing or google your same question.
