Funny, I'm reading it right now. The ending's weird.

Ok, I don't go to a public school, and we're reading it. I was reading that euthanasia and suicide WERE the reasons it was banned. The whole point of the book was to stress how bad those things were. And second off, our school has read books twice as bad. I don't think this book should be banned at all. It should be encouraged to read in schools.

The book "The Giver" has been banned or challenged in some school districts due to themes of sexuality, drugs, and violence, as well as some educators feeling that the story's dystopian elements and questioning of authority are not appropriate for younger readers. It has also been challenged for its depiction of family dynamics and the way it addresses themes of conformity and individuality.

Difference between euthanasia and suicide?

this is usually a health/ disease related medical death. Euthanasia is suicide that is performed as a medical procedure, usually because the patient has a terminal disease and the only other choice is a long, drawn out, painful death. this is because otherwise the patient will die, no matter what, and the doctor gets it over with.
