For many years the capital of Jamaica was Spanish Town, which is about 12 miles inland from Kingston Bay. The reason it was located inland was to protect it from attacks and raids from the sea which were a constant feature of early Jamaican history. Finally in the 1890's the capital was moved to Kingston which was the commercial and cultural centre of the nation, and had been since the demise of Port Royal in the 1690's (due to a particularly nasty earthquake). Several of the old colonial government buildings as well as the Jamaican Archives can be found in the old capital of Spanish Town
