∙ 16y agoOkinawa was supposed to become a spring board for the invasion of the main islands.
Capture of the island allowed an assembly of invasion materials, like ships, planes, ammo and other supplies, in short distance (350 miles) of southern Japan, the island of Kyushu.
As a side benefit it became possible for lighter aircraft than long-range B-29s to harrass Japanese war industrial facilities. Also, airfields on Okinawa were probably better than those on Iwojima.

∙ 11y agoIt has significant military value due to it's proximity to Japan. Okinawa provided a fleet anchorage for ships, troop staging areas, and airfields. This allowed the allies to bomb Japan at will.
