The Catholic church was one the two estates that ran the country. It was the first estate and set the morals for the entire society ( including kings). It taught the people that they were the connection between man and God. That humans were born in sin and that the only way to go to heaven was through the church. Since the population couldn't read or write the church also became the only means to learning The Bible.
