Not exactly. The explosions generate by the eruption of Krakatoa were enormous, but the island itself was not blown up. The eruption ejected so much magma, that the island of Krakatoa collapsed into the space left behind.
It is a composite volcano, so the kind of eruptions it has is explosive.
Okay from what we have found out so far 2012, it looks like Krakatoa is a super volcano. Pre 1883 The was a earlier Caldera forming eruption, which split the main land of Java and Sumatra apart. This lead to the formation of the Sunda Straits. (super eruption) 416 AD Krakatoa was again mentioned in the book of kings. In recent eruptions it has not had a large super eruption, but as we all know who like the story of Krakatoa it 'child' Anakrakatoa is a source of concern. So there's my answer circa 2012 :0)

False. The island of Krakatoa was indeed destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption in 1883, but it did not plow itself apart, nor was it the largest volcanic eruption. When Krakatoa erupted, it blasted out so much magma, that it left an empty space in the magma chamber. This caused the volcano to collapse in on itself. Such an even is called a caldera forming eruption. The largest eruption of historic times was the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. Other, prehistoric eruptions have been much larger.

Some websites say it was on a subduction zone, but Discovery Channel says it was a hot spot, so you can decide for yourself.
The explosive eruption has got to be powerful enough to create an eruption column (a Jet of hot gas and magma particles). This is shot into the atmosphere by the force of the eruption but the weight of the stuff in the eruption column is so great that it collapses back down on itself under gravity and runs down the sides of the volcano as a pyroclastic flow.
Mt.Krakatau got its name because the island it was formed on is called Krakatou and since it is the only mountain there it was named after the island. Anak Krakatou was formed after an eruption of Krakatou and it is so named as anak means child so it is Krakatoa's child.
Krakatoa destroyed 165 villages and towns, and 132 seriously damaged. Many thous0and people were injured by the eruption mostly from the tsunamis that followed. The eruption destroyed 2/3 of the islands of Krakatao. At least 36417 people died and the volcano is growing 5 metres per year.
There are two reasons for it being so explosive:1) Magma was trapped in a magma chamber close to the surface where it became more viscous, this meant less gas was able to escape prior to the eruption so the eruption was more explosive.2) Because there is ice on top of the volcano there were explosions when the ice heated up very quickly due to expanding water vapour.
