The hydrofoil was invented because it was seen that in a situation where enough power could be supplied to a watercraft, its hull could be lifted clear of the water. This would allow just the hydrofoil to support the weight of the vessel, and it could be driven very quickly across the water in that case. Small waves would not affect the ride, and the fact that the hull was out of the water reduced drag that be an impediment to a high top speed. No drag from the hull, higher speed!
