Lucknow pact was drawn up because the after the partition of Bengal the Muslims were happy with the decision of the British but at the same time Hindus were not happy with this act and they started fighting with the Britishers and forced them to reverse the partition of Bengal. the Britishers, to avoid unrest in India, reversed the partition. due to the reversal of partition of Bengal Muslims stood against the Britishers and thought that they were not trustworthy. but once again, in the first world war some of the Muslims & some Hindus supported the Britishers because they thought that if they would support the Britishers and if they won the war then the Britishers would give them some seats in Legislative Council and in Exclusive Council. but they failed and no seats were given to them. then once again Muslims were annoyed with the Britishers. both Muslims and Hindus decided to work together against British to demand for self-government. with the help of Jinnah from Muslims and Mahajan from India made efforts to demand self-government and seats in Legislative Council. at that time the Britishers were fighting with the Germans so they wanted to ensure that they did not have serious political unrest in India. so, they accepted their proposal and gave them seats in Councils. both Congress and Muslim League supported these proposals. their agreement also helped to draw the two parties closer together. although, Congress and the Muslim League realized that if further concessions were to be gained they had to develop greater cooperation between themselves. so with the help of Jinnah and Mahajan THE LUCKNOW PACT was drawn up in 1916...

Lucknow Pact was an agreement between Indian National Congress (INC) and All India Muslim League (AIML) in 1916. It came about because of persuasion by Jinnah who was the member of both these parties at that time. Another reason was the addition of self rule in the memorandum of AIML in 1913 which moved it closer to INC. The British government had already told that they were planning to reform and increase the locals in the government so these both parties (AIML and INC) jointly put forward the demands for self rule, majority of Indians in legislative councils and equality in executive councils and provincial autonomy.

The Partion of Bengal in 1905 made the Hundus angry and saw it as a threat that British were disuniting them, Therefore they boycotted the British goods and started Demonstrations against British and even the asassination was atempt on futur viceroy,The British was unable to bear these protest and finally reversed the partition of Bengal in 1911,This was a betrayal to the Muslims loyalty,Now they had to devise a new strategy for achieving their goals. They wanted to turn towards the demand of self-rule but they needed a constitutional protection seperate electorate and provincial autonomy from Hindus after the British would leave India.Muslim League therefore, signed the Lucknow Pact in 1916 in which Congress agreed on granting the Muslims 1/3 reserved seats in the central legislative council.

Lucknow pact 1916?

(December 1916), agreement made by the Indian National Congress and the All-India Muslim League and adopted by the Congress at its Lucknow session on December 29 and by the league on Dec. 31, 1916. The meeting at Lucknow marked the reunion of the moderate and radical wings of the Congress and was dominated by B.G. Tilak, the Marāthā leader. This session and the pact that came from it marked nationalist beginnings that resulted in the Noncooperation Movement of Mohandas Gandhi, 1920-22.
