When did "the nations capital" lose its apostrophe...
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871 effectively merged the City and the Territory into a single entity called the District of Columbia. It is for this reason that the city, while legally named the District of Columbia, is known as Washington, D.C.During the presidency of George Washington (1st president) the Capital Area was surveyed and created in law. President Washington also oversaw the planning and design competitions that layed out the capital and created various buildings etc.

British Columbia's first capital city was New Westminster. Established in 1859, it served as the capital of the colony of British Columbia until 1868, when the capital was moved to Victoria. New Westminster was chosen for its strategic location along the Fraser River and its accessibility for trade and transportation. Today, Victoria remains the capital of British Columbia.
In 1821, Columbia became the temporary seat of government in Mississippi as the legislature undertook a search to select a new capital. Prior to 1921 Washington and Natchez had served as the capital of the Territory/State.
New York is not the capital of the United States because the capital was moved to Washington, D.C. in 1800 to establish a separate federal district for the government, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.
Our current capital is Columbia, although it used to be Charleston. Other major cities include Greenville and Spartanburg in the northern part of the state, and of course, Myrtle Beach on the coast.
The nation's capital was moved south from New York City to Washington, D.C. to appease southern states and resolve a political conflict between the North and the South. The decision was made as part of the Compromise of 1790, which aimed to address the issue of federal assumption of states' debts. Moving the capital south was seen as a way to establish a neutral location away from the major urban centers of the North.
The Roman capital was moved to Bizantium and renamed it Constantinople.

A more central location was needed because Upcountry residents objected to having to travel so far to present issues to the legislature.
