The election of 2000 was controversial because George W. Bush won the electoral vote, but lost the popular vote. The Supreme Court decision related to this election was also controversial. In Bush v. Gore a divided Supreme Court ordered the recount of the election in the state of Florida stopped. This resulted in Bush winning the state of Florida by a margin of 537 votes and thus winning the presidency with 271 electoral votes over Gore's 266.

The election was very close. It came down to Florida's vote where the count was very close. Recounts were ordered. Recounts were disputed. The state supreme court acted. Eventually the Supreme Court ruled that Bush had won, making him the next President. As an aside, Gore won the popular vote.
