It was a good idea for the following reasons:
1. the non Muslims recruited in army should get a chance of living with the Muslims. They could see how honest, truthful, kind, just and helpful the Muslims were. It would give them a chance of understanding Islam. Many of them were influenced by the universal teachings of Islam and embraced Islam.
2. They felt honored and concluded that the Muslims trusted them. They tried to come up to the expectations of the Muslims.
3. A sense of human brotherhood developed between the two.

Assuming that this question is referring to countries which historically had all-Muslim armies, then the recruitment of non-Muslims to the armies served to foster the idea of nationalism and unity. It made the non-Muslims an important and integral part of the society and allowed for the slow erosion of inequalities in treatment. It also allowed non-Muslims to show their loyalty to their Muslim brothers in a clear and persuasive way.
If this question refers to any other army, it was just good common sense to continue recruiting whoever you were recruiting from before. No country should shift to an all-Muslim army because that promotes disunity, fear, and possible segregation.
