There is a lot to the answer of this question.

Locally, the only permanent trading centers were market towns and cities. The towns had to have charters for a market site, and in England, this had to be granted by the king. Cities were originally the sites of cathedrals. The effect was that there were very few market towns and cities, and people who wanted to go to market either had to go to temporary markets at fairs, or travel to town. This had the effect of concentrating trade in the market towns and cities to an increasing degree.

Internationally, trade was conducted between East and West, between Muslim countries and Christians, over spice roads to the Far East, and sea lanes. In the north, trade through the Baltic Sea was very important. Early Vikings traded all across Europe, and their effect in trade was especially strong in central Russia, where the Vikings eventually came to control large territories. The amount of trade gradually increased through the Middle Ages, with several serious interruptions, and we have records of a number of people who made rather large fortunes.

Among the traders who traveled to the East, Marco Polo stands out as important historically, because he left his book on where he had gone and what he had done.

Eventually, trade became so important that merchants became political rivals of the nobility. In Northern Europe, the Hanseatic League was an international organization with its own military organizations. In Italy, market towns called communes had republican governments based on guilds and merchants. International banking was based to some degree on trade.

Most medieval people lived on manors, either in or near villages, which had no permanent markets. There were only a few cities and towns. This meant that most people would have to travel a long distance to get to a market town. Local fairs were set up to operate for a short time each year or several times during the year, so local people could go to market at the, both to buy things not normally available locally, and to sell things they produced.
