The main purpose of the International Space Station (ISS) is for scientific research. Compounds mix differently in space than they do on earth. Here on earth, gravity forces heavier objects, including molecules, to sink below lighter ones. That does not happen in space since there is no gravity to pull the heavier elements down. That means we can create compounds in space that can not be combined here on earth.
Another reason for the ISS is earth observation. Perhaps the biggest benefit of the ISS is teaching man to fly longer distances, and thereby spend more time, in space. This will allow future genterations the ability to travel to distant planets and perhaps other stars and galaxies.
