The Liberty Bell wasn't named as we know it until it was 86 years old. The bell's original name was "State House Bell." The bell officially became "The Liberty Bell" in 1839 and has exclusively been called such since 1893.
Right now it is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on display. It is no longer in a bell tower.
Mr Pass and Mr Stow recast the Liberty Bell after it cracked in 1753. The bell had to be cast three times and was eventually hung in the Steeple of the State House in Philadelphia. I am informed that the Bell is in the House of Pass and Stow, being the Steeple of State House. That is unless someone has a different explanation...........
From the Liberty Bell website: http://www.ushistory.org/libertybell/The Bell achieved its iconic status when abolitionists adopted the Bell as a symbol for the movement. It was first used in this association as a frontispiece to an 1837 edition of Liberty, published by the New York Anti-Slavery Society. It was, in fact, the abolitionists who gave it the name "Liberty Bell," in reference to its inscription. It was previously called simply the "State House bell."
