Then, as now, many people in America were caught up with the glory of war - the pageantry, the parades, the medals and the uniforms. Anyone who indicated that war was a terrible and loathsome activity flew in the face of public opinion. This was even more identifiable as a problem when it was drawn to peoples attention that the proper and rich citizens got to stay at home safe and sound while their brave young men went off t do the dirty work out of sight. A further problem was that Twain identified the enemy as being human - the wives and children, not just the soldiers, suffered and bled without care or concern. To ice this all Twain put it in the context of a prayer to a loving and caring god who rejoiced in the ruin the war caused.
"The War Prayer" by Mark Twain was considered risky to publish because it criticizes blind patriotism, questions the true intentions behind war, and challenges the role of religion in supporting violence. Its anti-war and anti-imperialist sentiments made it controversial and potentially alarming to the public.
