The principle of 'Freedom of the seas' was important in World War 1 because the Germans had declared unrestricted warfare in the seas, severely disrupting trade and shipping. American president Woodrow Wilson included 'freedom of the seas' in his Fourteen Points.
Earth is for 70% covered in water. Many nations are sperated from eachother by large oceans and seas. At the time of WWI and WWII the best and most efficient way to travel between water seperated land was by ship. This included the transport of resources, men and equipment from and too colonies and allies. If one was to control the seas, one would cut off their enemies from their allies and resources. Since many nations(especially the UK and Japan) relied on that it was very important indeed.
it was important for supplies to reinforce armies or food for the army. if you had control of the sea, it would be a lot easier to win the war. and it would have been easier to invade countries.
Freedom of the seas was threatened during WWI because Germany was using what was known as unrestricted submarine warfare, where their submarines would sink any ship in sight no matter what nation or type of ship it was.
Great Britain ruled the seas or France
The big one would be that it ended world war 1. also important is that it created the League of Nations, an alliance between the countries at the peace conference saying they would avoid war and protect each other from attacks. there is something about freedom of the seas, but im not really sure what that is. I think it has to do with trading or something like that

It says that seas should be free (both in peace and war) for all nations = Freedom of Navigation.
