His sister Mary was first in line to the throne, but because she was a catholic, some protestants feared her ascension (chief of which, the duke of Northumberland). Since Mary was declared illegitimate by her father, they claimed Jane Grey (granddaughter of Henry's sister had the highest claim). She was protestant and married to the duke's son.

Most English people disagreed with this and supported Mary.
