Thomas Paine wrote those words in a pamphlet called The Crisis. Paine wrote several pamphlets with that title, but these words were in the first one. The reason was that during the winter George Washington spent at Valley Forge, his troops and the colonists at large began to weary of the war and many wanted to stop it. He mainly wrote it for the troops though, many of whom were on the verge of deserting, leaving the army as their enlistments ran out or just plain mutineering. Paine's work convinced many soldiers and civilians to keep on fighting instead of giving up even though the times were so hard that they did try mens' souls.
they thought blacks had no souls and they could not go to heaven so they used them instead of whites.

It's important that you don't rush it. Take your time, get comfortable and try not to be too nervous. It's crucial that you both are relaxed and ready for it. Don't set your expectations too high, not many first times are amazing. You might not get it exactly right the first time, but that's what the second, third, fourth.... times are for. Try to make it the best experience you can, try to enjoy each other and the fireworks will come eventually. But this is a big step, so make sure you both are ready for it properly. Do use protection! always be safe.

Thomas Paine once said "these are the times that try men's souls". This was a direct allusion to Rousseau's direct philosophy of self determination.
One of Mary Ludwig's famous quotes is: "Come on, don't worry about me, I've got nine lives left!" This was said during the Battle of Monmouth, where she took over her husband's position in the artillery after he collapsed. Another one is: "Well, if he won't defend it, I will!" when asked to leave the cannon during battle.
