To be able to hit and choke a person, you must use two arms, and we learned in the story, that Tom's left arm is useless, as in a cotton gin accident, all the muscle was torn out of it.

Tom Robinson couldn't have hurt Mayella on her right side or put his hands around her throat because his left arm was crippled from a previous injury, making it physically impossible for him to do so. This physical limitation was a significant piece of evidence in his favor during the trial in "To Kill a Mockingbird."
