In the Aztec culture warfare was a means of subjugating other groups - which paid tribute to them, and to supply the rather large number of human sacrifices required for their religion (estimates range from 20,000 to 250,000 per year!). Their ritual "flower wars" (which were real battles where people were killed in hand-to-hand combat) provided training for their military as well as providing victims for sacrifices. Death in a "flower war" was considered even more honorable than death in a regular war and guaranteed the dead soldier a place in heaven with Huitzilopochtli (the supreme god of sun, fire, and war). Since the nobles were expected to take part in these lethal flower wars it sort of helped select the most able warriors for leadership positions since the less capable died..
