The British came to Africa, and traded slaves for sugar. (Sugar was rare in Africa, the kings traded men and women for it.) Then the British took the slaves away on ships, sailed them to America, and sold them. The South took more interest than the North (South had more farms, North more factories.) in the slaves. "Ooh, someone else can do the work for me!" was the basic idea. And so whites owned slaves.
ANSWER:Not all Whites in the South owned land, nor did they have slaves. Many Whites were just as poor as the Black slaves. Many had to hire themselves out to do work for the wealthy land owners. Some Whites were sharecroppers with powerful plantation owners. Of course the wealthy land owners would take advantage of the Whites, just as they did with their slaves.
they need slaves cuz the plantation owners which were the whites did not want to work.
Racial Doctrine. (Blacks inferior to Whites.)
No. There were free blacks who were slave owners, and Indians too.
Around 75% of southern whites owned fewer than five slaves. The majority of white southerners owned no slaves at all, as slaves were primarily held by a small percentage of wealthy plantation owners.
Slave owners feared poor whites because they were seen as competition for labor resources. Poor whites could potentially undermine the hierarchical structure of society by forming alliances with slaves to challenge the institution of slavery. Additionally, poor whites posed a threat to the economic interests of slave owners by demanding higher wages or better working conditions.
There is not single answer to this as it varied by owner. Usually slaves lived in separate houses/dwellings. Wealthy owners often built houses equivalent to poor whites. Slaves of less affluent owners lived in shacks equivalent to those that housed farm animals. Some owners allowed slaves to live in the attic of their homes. There were other arrangements. See related link below for the living arrangements of George Washington's slaves when he was president.
Never mind, I found the answer myself. "Of the 27 million whites counted in the 1860 census, 8 million lived in the slave owning states of the South. Of these, 385,000 owned slaves. Statistically, 4.8% of all Southern whites owned slaves. When factored by the entire population, 1.4% of all United States whites were slave owners."
Yes, they did. Whites believed that slaves were incapable of living on their own and taking care of themselves. Slave owners saw it as their duty to watch over the slaves.
The whites who had slaves are all dead. Get over it.
Probably better than they were treated by whites or Native Americans. ................................................................................................... they were beaten and whipped! (if they didnt do what they were told) but they also have them food and stuff
The slave owners bought their slaves at auctions.
