Wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand due to tradition. It is believed to have been derived from the Romans, as it was thought that the vein in the fourth finger was connected to the heart directly. Many countries have their own traditions with some Catholic and some Orthodox countries wearing the ring on the right finger.

Wedding rings were worn on the middle finger, but in the 18th century europeans used a bow type weapon to "Pluck" their enemy. This would sometimes get tangled with the wedding band and remove the skin from the finger. After about 50 years of repeated injuries, King George III passed assisted in writing the commoner's warfighting doctrine which instructed field soldiers to wear the ring on the third finger (most protected from the bow's string.)

Another theory is: its to easy to get away with giving someone the "bird" by wearing the band on the middle finger- and only Italian mobsters wear pinky rings.

The fourth finger on the left hand is generally thought of to be the finger which is connected to the heart. This dates back throughout history, although some traditions and religions believe different things and so they wear it on a different finger

According to tradition the wedding ring is worn on the left ring finger because the vein in the left ring finger was believed to be directly connected to the heart.

Different countries and different religions all have their own customs for it though. Also, from a practical point of view, many brides and grooms will chose to wear their wedding band on the hand they use the least (e.g. if you're right handed on the left, if you're left handed on the right) so as to avoid scratches or damages to the ring from every day work.
