Rather than remain loyal to the king who was simply a figure head and acted in much the same way as the queen does today, loyalists remained loyal to the British Parliament. This is because despite what we learn in many text books at school the British government did not treat the colonies nearly as poorly as the Propaganda of the time made it seem. Many loyalists were born in Britain and were patriots of their own nation. They belived King George III would still be their leader.
