Renaissance Artists were professionals. They made their livings by selling their work or by being paid commissions to create large projects. The had to buy their materials (paints brushes, canvasses; stone, chisels, hammers). They sometimes had to pay workers to assist them with big projects, and they had to pay for their daily necessities (food, shelter, clothing, et cetera) while the work was being created. In short, it was their job.
