Why were both sides in the cold war hesitant to start the war?

It was pretty much straight after WW2 and no one really wanted to get back into another one. THE MANE REASON is because nuclear weapons was now introduced with both sides neither wanting to be blown to shreds. America at one point was on DefCom2 which is one level away from NUCLEAR WAR! It was a war but with no actual fighting hence the name 'cold' war. They ended up fighting about technology and which race was the better technologically advanced. for example the space race, the arms race and so on. Besides who wants to go to war, no one in the WW1 or WW2 wanted to go to war. it was because they had to. (except for Hitler ofcourse!)

Stalemate cold war term?

No, stalemate is a chess term, meaning an end with no winner. As long as the Cold War lasted and both sides were still able to one-up each other, it was not a stalemate.

How did nuclear weapons make it a cold war?

At the heart of the Cold War and the development of nuclear weapons lay the concept of "Mutually Assured Destruction, fittingly shortened to MAD.The meaning of this was that both sides had so much weaponry that it was impossible to knock the enemy out completely with the first blow. And if you didn't manage that, the revenge would damage your countrybeyond what was considered acceptable. So it was called a "cold" war, because while it never broke out into a real war, both sides kept preparing and posing as if it MIGHT happen.
