Castles built on high ground allows the occupants to have a better view of any approaching enemy from the valley below. It also made it difficult to attacking foe to attack the castle, as they would need to attack uphill, in clear view from above..
Well, you literally have "the higher ground". For example, you can see enemies coming from afar. (In medieval times) Archery is a lot easier to use, because the enemies would be in plain sight because of the rocky landscape. Also, arrows gain extra speed (because of gravity) when shot downwards.
-- Previous answer-- So that your enemies cannot sneak up on you.
(1) To make it easier to see the enemy coming from any direction, (2) to slow down an enemy attack as they have to march uphill. But mostly (1).
It's easier to defend points higher than the attackers. That way you are shooting down instead of up.
they were built on hills for defence. you can see a lot from at the top of a hill, therefore they can see enemys approaching and prepare. also hills slow you down when you are climbing.
so that they had an advantage over attackers. They higher up so they were able to see in many directions.
p.s. hope this helps
A hilltop castle allows for greater sightlines over the surrounding area. The rulers of the castle would be able to see for much farther if anyone was coming to attack.
