Better field of view; you can see farther from the top of a hill, also, any attacker would have to come up the hill at you, tiering their army, in addition to your defenders having a greater range granted by firing from a higher elevation. MoreCastles were not always built on hills. Some were built on ordinary countryside and surrounded by moats. Some castles were built on islands. Some were built along the banks of rivers. The point of such placement was to make it difficult to approach the castle with siege towers or to scale the walls with ladders.

If an invading army wants to break down the gate of your castle, it is harder to do if they have to charge the gate in an uphill direction. In addition, defensive fire from the castle is enhanced by gravity, if it is going downhill. Arrows will strike with greater force.

For protection and for the view. Usually, the city backed up against the hill with a castle or defense on the top. With this arrangement guards could see for miles around to watch for any invading army or troops and warn the people.

Medieval castles were built on high mountains as a form of defense. Up high on the mountain it is much easier to see any approaching enemies.

It is good because the castle owner can see attakers from down the hill. Also the attakers would become tired as they walked up the hill. x
