How do you restrain cattle?

The best way to restrain cattle is by using a head-gate or head-catch. A squeeze chute has a head-catch on it, but it also has side panels that squeeze the animal's sides so that it cannot move around. This allows the cowhand to vaccinate, brand, tag, and even castrate the animal, when need be. It also allows the producer to preg-check or AI his cows, or do semen testing on his bulls. Cowhands restrain cattle using a horse, a saddle, and a good lariat or riata. An animal is restrained by first roping the head (or the horns if it has horns) by one cowhand and then the back legs by another cowhand. The horses then keep the rope taught (rope has been looped around the saddle horn) so the animal cannot escape. When catching calves for branding, a cowboy or cowgirl lassos the calf's hind legs, looping the other end of the rope to the horn of the saddle, then drags the calf to the branding fire where other cowhands will brand, castrate, vaccinate and tag the calf.
