FDR liked being president and his ego was such that he probably actually believed that nobody else could do as well as he could and maybe even that nobody else could even save the country from the threat of war .

President Roosevelt is the only president who got elected four times. He ran for president for a fourth time because he enjoyed being president and making a difference within his job as president using views that he believed in.

FDR ran for a third term in 1940. No US president had ever run for a third tem. A lot of people wanted George Washington to serve a third term, but he refused, saying it was a bad idea and would set a bad precedent if he did it. Many people, even in his party, did not want Roosevelt to run again, but he was able to arrange for a "draft" at the convention which he gladly accepted.
