They were referred to as "49ers" because that was the year the California gold rush started (1849).
Some good things about the gold rush are that it contributed to westward expansion, it made many people wealthy, and it injected a large amount of gold into the economy. It was a short lived but important part of American history.
The element is "gold" and California had a gold rush.
Depends on what ounce you want it in. * The avoirdupois ounce is the most commonly used ounce today. It is equal to 28.35 grams * A troy ounce (abbreviated as t oz) is equal to 31.10 grams. There are 12 troy ounces in the now obsolete troy pound. The troy ounce is used only to express the mass of precious metals such as gold, platinum or silver. * * The Dutch ounce is 100 gram * The Chinese traditional ounce (tael) has been given a metric value of 50 grams. So 8 grams of gold is 0.257 Troy ounces (approx.) or 0.282 Avirduoise ounces However, if you are looking at a ring it is not likely to be pure gold, rather an alloy. This indicated by the karat stamp (e.g. 10 K) this indicates the fraction of pure gold in the item. 24 K is pure gold.
I think it was California well during the 1800 in goldmines. Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont could be candidates, but the quantities were very small and no significant mining was done. (Gold, as it turns out, can be found in most all of the fifty stated, but, again, the concentrations are not significant.) The Georgia gold rush in 1829 preceded the California gold rush by almost 20 years.

The gold was discovered in 1848, but many of the prospectors did not arrive until the next year. That is why they were called '49ers.
Gold miners could be called prospectors. Some prospectors who sought their fortunes during the California gold rush were called 49ers. (That gold rush began in 1848, but was really roaring in 1849, hence the nickname for those prospectors.)

Gold Prospectors
The 49ers were all of the miners. The California Gold Rush occured in 1849, ergo, the miners, or people who went west in search for gold, were dubbed "'49ers."
The Forty-niners. That was the name given to the prospectors who went to California looking for gold following the discovery of gold there in 1849.
The gold rush famously prompted the '49ers - gold prospectors - to flock to California in 1849. The Civil War didn't start until 1860.
They were called prospectors. Most of them were Americans.
The California Gold Rush attracted prospectors from all over the world.

The "Forty Niners" were a group of gold prospectors who lived in northern California during the Gold Rush. In present time, the 49ers is an NFL team located in San Fransisco.
