∙ 11y agobecause Sawdust is a good insulator. that is it does not conduct heat easily, Which means that if you put it around ice the heat that melts it cant get to it very easily stopping it from melting. During the Australian gold rush they packed giant blocks of ice from the Canadian glaciers, in crates with sawdust around them in Canada. They would ship them to the Australian gold fields and sell it for its weight in gold for the miners drinks.
