In the story "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" by Mildred D. Taylor, Little Man and Cassie were switched on the first day of school by their teacher, Miss Crocker, because she did not want the black students to have new textbooks like the white students. By giving Little Man a dirty and worn-out book that was falling apart, she tried to show her prejudice and discrimination towards the black students.
