most of the Mayan villages were located inland because the Mayans were a advanced civilization with a huge population that built large cites. In creating their large cities the Mayans were faced with problems of rough terrain and infertile soils, These problems meant that the natural terrain restricted their ability to set up their cities in accessible locations and meant also severe limitation on the populations of such cities,The limitations on population would have been a direct result of the inability of the terrain to provide agricultural areas for food production. They engaged in large scale projects of drainage in areas that were formally swampy or marshland (inland), This proved quite effective as such land once drained of excess water proved quite fertile and perfect for the cultivation of food crops, Another problem was that of dense jungles.Itwas necessary for the Mayans to remove large forested areas and turn them into useful agricultural lands

The Tainos villages were located near the coast or streams as these were areas with easy access to reliable fresh water and fertile land areas for the cultivation of their main crop ,cassava they also relied on fishng and trading.
