There was a large area of land that the British soldiers tried to take from the German soldiers. No one could advance on either side, the soldiers and their commanders got tired of even trying. A newspaper reported named this the Western Front.

The US troops, among others, were sent in to break this stalemate, and to move against the Germans. This they did, thanks to General Pershing, by ignoring the stalled British Army, and going around the Western Front with all its trenches.
