You don't give a timeframe. In Britain, after about 1955, new investment was chanelled into the roads. A further problem for passengers arose from the astonishing rigidity of railway pricing structures. Until the introduction of family rail cards in the 1980s they charged per person, which made them very expensive.
railways were unpopular because people wasted there money just to go on the train when they could of taken a bus which was much cheaper
Central Railways, Northern Railways & Western Railways.
By unpopular i presume you mean that people were nervous about travelling on them ? this was because rumours had been spread that as a human beings body's had never travelled at these new speeds there eyes would pop out or worse there body's would explode ! As far as unpopular for transport you could not be further from the truth , the railways opened up the towns and villages thought the UK even giving us a national time . railway time where the whole of England's time was standardised. It helped us prosper and build the Empire, even giving us fish a chips as the fish could travel to the big towns and city's in hours not days.
These railways are awesome!
