By unpopular i presume you mean that people were nervous about travelling on them ? this was because rumours had been spread that as a human beings body's had never travelled at these new speeds there eyes would pop out or worse there body's would explode !
As far as unpopular for transport you could not be further from the truth , the railways opened up the towns and villages thought the UK even giving us a national time . railway time where the whole of England's time was standardised.
It helped us prosper and build the Empire, even giving us fish a chips as the fish could travel to the big towns and city's in hours not days.
