the US Civil War
IMPROVEMENT.
Because the rivers represented for the Union excellent way of penetrations into the South territory and for the Confederacy their control had to be defended at all costs in order to avoid strategic irrecoverable disadvantages in case their control would be lost.
A bright example is that given by the course of Mississippi River, whose conquest by Union split the Confederacy into two parts.
Rivers and railroads were very important in the US Civil War for transporting troops, equipment, and supplies. The two sides would fight over the right to use said transportation. And the trains they could sleep on.
Rivers were the natural roadways. The river valleys were easy to travel along, provided a source of water necessary for the troops and could be used to trasnport the troops and supplies on the waterways for long distances quickly and cheaply. Rivers, being difficult to cross, serve as a natural funnel forcing the armies to go in certain directions.
During the US Civil War, war supplies, communications and troops moved faster with the help of transportation. Generally speaking, this brought with it battles to control these important places.Controlling rail and river transportation helped each side in their war efforts.

The battles of the Civil War were mostly fought south, including Kentucky, Missouri and Maryland. The only great Battle fought north was that of Gettysburg.
The Union named its battles after rivers and creeks. The South named hem after nearby cities and towns. That is why the North called the battle Bull Run, and the South called the same battle Manassas, for instance.
The South fought fought major battles on northern soil at Antietam. Then there was the Battle of Chickamauga, the 3 Chattanooga Battles, and the Battle of Gettysburg
