William needed so many castles due to the uprising of the Yorkshire people in 1069. Over 500 Motte and Bailey castles were built.
Shell Keep castles were built in the year 1172! +++ Not sure where the adjective "shell" comes from, but castles with a keep - the central building in the complex, and the main accommodation - were built mainly in the few centuries of the Mediaeval period , not just in one arbitrary year.

At first it was simply a castle made out of wood surrounded by a motte. Surrounding the motte was the bailey. And surrounding that was the wooden wall (this was how the normans built their castles, because king William was from Normandy and now he is king of England, he built Norman castles in England). This was all to easy to attack so they eventually built a more modern castle.
=They built so many in all different countries!=
true or false did the normans bring the idea of building castles from norway
the Normans changed the design because they thought the defence system was weak so in order to save them selfes they built bigger, stronger and more powerful castles wich we can still see today.
The first Motte and Bailey Castle was built at Mont Glonme on the River Loire in France in 990 - so the Normans were used to using the castle to dominate their tenants under the feudal system. The Normans also brought feudalism to England. Prior to the Norman invasion in 1066 led by William the Conqueror there were hardly any castles in England and the ones that did exist were built by Norman lords who were friends of King Edward the Confessor.
I don't think so because I was told that the Normans created the Motte and Bailey castles. I hope it helps! (Sorry if it doesn't)
there were 1564 motte and Bailey castles first built in England by the Norman's. the castles had a special hidden part called the "secrete tripe. the secrete tripe is a place where soldiers lie in wait for the enemy to try and invade round the back of the castle.
They built it there so then it can be safe.
he built as many as he could so that his soilders where safe and manly his self
There are a huge amount of castles all around Europe and they have been built by many different people, so there is no one answer to your question.
