Wealth became concentrated in the hands of foreign investors and a small Mexican elite. Most Mexicans lived in poverty, and oppositon to Diaz grew steadily. In 1910 Porfirio Diaz ran for re-election. As in earlier elections, Diaz controlled the outcome. Just before the election began, he jailed his opponent Francisco Madero. When the ballots were counted, Diaz claimed to had earned a million votes and Madero had earnedfewer than 200.
