Slaves were not allowed to learn to read and write. Education was forbidden, so they could improve their position in society. Often, they were watched in the fields by an overseer. When slaves initially landed in America, they were separated from their families and paired up with other slaves who did not speak their same language. This way the slaves could not coordinate an escape in secret by speaking other languages. Later on, slaves were allowed to have families, but they would speak to each other in English. Sometimes (though rarely) house-slaves were taught how to read by their masters, but this was illegal for both master and slave.

They weren't. Their owners did not want to be seen with them if he didn't have to. This caused many owners to lose touch with their slaves, and in their free time, when they knew he wouldn't be around, they would sing and dance. Owners wanted their slaves to have children because the children would become their slaves, when they grew up. This allowed them to buy less slaves and save money.

Slaves sang work songs and used field hollers to make the physical labor of their work easier, maintain a sense of rhythm and unity among the workers, and express their emotions and cope with the hardships of their situation. These songs also served as a form of communication and a way to preserve cultural and spiritual traditions.
