Normandy is not a city. It is a region of northern France. The Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944. This was the first place that any of the Allied army was in a position to combat the German army on the northern Europe. It began the Allied advance that would liberate France and begin to directly attack Germany.

The Normandy landings established the allies' first foothold in France. With a foothold in France, the allies were able to fight on three fronts- Southern Europe, Western Europe (France), and Eastern Europe (Russia).

Up until the beach landing, the allies were not sure they were going to win the war. Once Normandy was successful, winning the war became a lot more likely.
