The Soviets were concerned when Hungary withdrew from the Warsaw Pact in 1956 due to fears of a domino effect that could inspire other Eastern Bloc countries to challenge Soviet authority and seek greater independence. Hungary's actions threatened the cohesion of Soviet control over Eastern Europe, potentially destabilizing the region.
