Military doctrine of the anti-communist forces was to draw the enemy into full pitched battles and then destroy them with superior firepower, the methods of the NVA/NLF was to wear down the enemies morale through sneak attacks, sniping and on the whole being very annoying to find, also the lack of a frontline makes it difficult to pinpoint where the enemy are, once people realised that the VC were never going to stop then they don't see a point in fighting anymore.
