The Heroic Period of Antarctic exploration, which ended in 1922, always excluded women because a 'woman's place' was elsewhere.

Nearly 100 years later, we continue to struggle with some of the same issues. Current Antarctic populations of scientists and workers in support of science, still find a large majority of men involved, with women always outnumbered by males.
