It was because it was a dry environment. If they were built on fertile land than the moisture would get in to every crevace and decompose the stone, the pharaoh and make all their valuable metal/gold belongings rusty. Before the Pharaohs were put into their tombs, they were left under salt piles up to 42 days to draw all of the moisture of of their bodies so that their flesh wouldnt rot when they were mummified. this is a strait guess but they were maybe made in the desert because...
1. the Egyptians live in Africa in a desert area.
and 2. because they had so much sun and it was so hot so maybe the bricks they used dried faster.
It is because there were flooding during July, August and September of the Nile, so the water may destroy the pyramids if those pyramids were built by the Nile.
