I heard that GM (under an alias company name) bought the companies up because they manufactured busses. In truth they were a nuisance to autombile traffic and the rapid movement of people between point A and Point B. As the system was designed and in place at the time that was probably true. Rapid transit in the future was not concived of and so goes Urban Planning.
