Because their faith was based around an ancient cosmogenic understanding that saw Creation and all it's associated aspects as being central to the very essence of Being. It revolved around a recognition of the necessity for a union between the male and female principles of spirituality ( a bit like Yin and Yang in Buddhism), which they called 'Hiero Gamoi', without which they felt existence in any meaningful sense was impossible. Thus their temples were the worshipping-houses of the Gods and Goddesses that had created and maintained this Creation, and were thus central to the continued existence of humanity and the world in general.
