Actually there are 4 Blackfoot tribes but before that there were many "bands". A band was a group of families and individuals who lived, hunted and went on war parties together. There could be multiple bands and each had it's own selected leader. All the bands usually only met up once a year during the sundance festival and sometimes during the winter to share food and shelter. Bands could split up, add new members and form new bands...The Blackfoot were extremely nomadic and fierce warriors of the plains so it all depended on what fit them the best. There are currently 4 now because after the bands had been decimated by smallpox and starvation they started coming together in large groups forming 4 separate tribes or divisions of the Blackfoot and were given land/reservations based on those tribes.
The Blackfoot, or Blackfeet Indians, buffalo-hunting people are residents of the northern plains, particularly in Montana, Idaho in the U.S and in southern Alberta, Canada. There were three Blackfoot bands living in Montana, but today there is only one tribe living in Montana.
The Blackfoot group refers to themselves as the "Niitsitapi," which translates to "the people" in their native language. This name reflects their identity and cultural heritage. The term "Blackfoot" is derived from the color of their traditional footwear and was used by outsiders. The Niitsitapi include several bands, such as the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani.

The Blackfoot people are a Native American tribe primarily located in the northern Great Plains region of North America, specifically in both the United States and Canada. In the U.S., they are mainly found in Montana, while in Canada, they reside in Alberta and British Columbia. The Blackfoot Nation is comprised of several bands, including the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani in Canada, and the Blackfeet Tribe in the U.S. Thus, the Blackfoot people are both American and Canadian, depending on their specific location.
There are four Blackfoot bands: three in Canada and one in the United States. A Blackfoot band is known as a tribein the United States and a First Nation in Canada. Each Blackfoot tribe or First Nation lives on its own reservation or reserve, which means land that belongs to the tribe and is legally under their control. The four Blackfoot bands are politically independent. Each one has its own government, laws, police, and services, just like a small country. In the past, the Blackfeet nation was led by a council of chiefs, one from each clan. The Blackfeet people really valued harmony, so every chief had to agree on a decision before action could be taken (this is called consensus). Today, Blackfeet council members are elected like governors or mayors are... but their government still works by consensus.
