People in every culture across the world regardless of time or place sought and have to this day sought to put meaning and expatiation of how things work beyond the seen, beyond the mundane. Philosophically it fills a need people have for a greater existence for an greater power then there own, a way to place blame when things go bad or a good. Religion can be used as a tool by priest to govern people. Fear of a god over fear of a man is far more instilling. Gods where often used to retell stories of warnings morals and teachings rules. In the end there is no simple answer beyond this, they exist out of need. Every Culture has them not just the Greeks so do not take just one as an example and ask yourself why does any culture need a god. Because we want to believe there is something greater then ourselves in control of our lives some divine force that can be appeased with offerings that was like ourselves only Superior to us in every way shape and form.
